Positive Parenting
Faith in Families values and supports the right for every child to enjoy a fulfilling and supportive family life and recognise the importance of positive parenting and its impact on children’s achievements. Parents and the home environment they create are the single most important factor in shaping their children’s well-being, achievements and prospects (Every Parent Matters, DFES, 2007).
Research and our own experience in the provision of child-centred services for over 60 years suggest that when families are struggling, it is crucially important to get the right help at the right time. Faith in Families has developed a range of parenting support programmes which can be specifically tailored to meet the needs of the parents taking part and can range from a one day course to a series of weekly sessions over 6-8 weeks. The course content is based on established models of what works well in practice and would draw upon our colleagues vast range of professional experience and expertise in child-care and family work. The programme can be delivered within individual parishes and located within church halls, community centres and also within schools; we are particularly keen to work in partnership with schools as they play a vital role in the lives of children and their families.
The overall aims and objectives of the programme are to:
- Improve relationships within families;
- Enable parents to identify their own parenting objectives;
- Provide an opportunity for parents to revisit their own values, ethos and beliefs;
- Educate parents as to specific strategies and techniques to manage behaviour;
- Enhance parent’s confidence in their own abilities;
- Reduce feelings of isolation and develop supportive relationships with other parents;
- Identify areas of parental stress and seek to resolve these.
- Support families to stay together.
